Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park

Mammoth Hot Springs is in the northern section of Yellowstone National Park.  It is 6200 feet in elevation and is just inside the North Entrance.  The thermal features here are quite different than elsewhere in the park.   The area consists of many hot springs and when the hot water comes up through the limestone, large amounts of the rock is dissolved by the hot water and limestone deposits are left.  There are numerous travertine terraces that are just beautiful to see.  We were disappointed to see that many of the springs were dried up since the last time we visited in 2009.  I read recently that the activity at the springs varies from 'day-to-day' and that a spring that appears "dried up" can begin flowing again.  Overall, the water flow is pretty consistent.
